To be honest, I am a chronic over-thinker. I love to isolate, and I have been really bad at self-care in the past. When I’m struggling in one area of my life, I tend to (unconsciously) punish myself by hiding at home, and taking away the simple things that bring me joy (like my beauty routines, and exercise). I’m writing this to remind myself just as much as you, that self-care actually isn’t selfish, and that it is important. A few weeks ago, I encouraged myself to try a 7-day self-care challenge. These things have all turned into new positive habits! Here are a few ways I practice self-care:
“Just a reminder: self-care is not something you have, it is something you claim.” Cleo Wade
MEDITATION
I caught myself suggesting to my mom that she try meditation, as a form of stress relief, and I thought to myself: “Who are you?” The truth is, meditation has lightened my mood. It has taught me breathing techniques, I wouldn’t have otherwise known, to get me through stressful situations. Meditating also feels good. I like that I get to take 5 minutes (or more) to nurture myself. I use Simple Habit. There are tons of options, and you can even set a daily reminder.
CREATE RITUALS
Since I am my own boss, I tend to overload my own schedule, and simply forget to do things for myself. The way I’ve gotten around that is, I allocate a day in the week for my little rituals. On Sundays I love to take long baths. I sit in a tub of bubbles, while wearing a face and hair mask. When I get out, I’ll lather in body oil, and take my time as I apply numerous skincare products. It makes me feel so cared for.
NETFLIX AND CHILL
Sometimes you just need to relax and do nothing. I am very big on isolation, so this is my favorite part. I try not to over do it, but I veg out and watch my favorite shows over ice cream. I’ll even eat the entire pint, too. ‘Netflix and Chill’ definitely gets filled under my cheat day, which is another form of my self-care. I’ve been watching ‘Love‘, and crying into my Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Swiss Almond Ice Cream. It’s amazing!
I really hope you give yourself a much-needed break. Your emails aren’t going anywhere, but your energy levels will. Take care of you―you only got one! Also, please feel free to share your self-care tips in the comments below.
